Calcium carbonate (Tums)
Antacid. Neutralizes stomach acid. Minimal systemic CNS effects. No direct brain effect — does not cross the blood–brain barrier.
Benefits
Fast-acting antacid that neutralizes stomach acid for quick heartburn relief, and a source of supplemental calcium.
Risks
Overuse can cause constipation, elevated calcium, and (with lots of dairy) milk-alkali syndrome; it also reduces absorption of some drugs and doesn’t treat the cause of reflux.
